Provenance Mark

Form of privy mark denoting the source of the metal used in coins. Examples include the plumes or roses on English coins denoting silver from Welsh or West of England mines, and the elephant or elephant and castle on gold coins denoting bullion imported bv the African Company. Coins inscribed VlGO (1702-03) or LlMA (1745-46) denote bullion seized from the Spaniards by Anglo-Dutch privateers and Admiral Anson respectively. Other provenance marks on English coins include the letters ElC and SSC, denoting bullion imported by the East India Company or the South Sea Company.
